High above the city of sacrilege swarmed the spirits of demons, swooping down, flying back up, circling, and dropping down again.

The searing heat, darkness, and bitter cold were gone. The sun, moon, stars, and weather had returned to normal.

Up in the mountains, the intense heat that had melted the glaciers had sent torrents of blood racing through the rivers, destroying the bridges leading west from New Babylon. But now the rushing blood of the great river Euphrates had suddenly stopped, leaving an open pathway to the west. From upriver came reports that the blood formed a giant whirlpool, dropped into the depths of the earth, and never reemerged.

But even that couldn’t please the Imperator whose heart boiled with an ever-increasing rage.

Sitting at the head of his video conference room table, Davato took another swig of whiskey and shifted uncomfortably in his chair. Was there no way to alleviate the sores on his rump, legs, arms, and forehead? The doctors he consulted were useless. They, along with everyone else, also suffered. They were unable to cure even themselves.

He sent a withering glance down the table at those he’d gathered for this most important of meetings:

Sebastien Rey, the Prophet, and Minister of Virtue.

Blanche DuMont, Minister of Charity.

Adam Turner, Minister of Truth.

Grady Wilson, his personal secretary.

François DesRoches, Vice President of the Unitum Imperium.

On the monitors covering most of the far wall, all ten governors of the provinces appeared in squares.

In another, larger square was General Eric Hofmann, for the moment still Minister of Peace, still in Jerusalem unable to quell the revolt. But for the last two weeks, Davato had sent agents to sideline the general with meaningless tasks. And by the worried expression on Hofmann’s face, Davato knew that Hofmann knew what was about to happen.

Occupying another window as large as Hofmann’s was the general’s second-in-command, Dax Warner, an American general who’d successfully commanded forces in Iraq and Africa.

When Hofmann saw Warner’s square beside his own, he wiped sweat from his forehead and glanced nervously from side to side.

Everyone was present, and it was time to start.

“Before we begin, I want you all to witness a change of leadership. One among us has, again and again, exhibited a stunning incompetence and a complete failure in his duty to his Imperator and to the Unitum Imperium.”

Hofmann’s screen now showed two uniformed agents of the Imperium Dark Service at his side as the general’s glance sought escape from the room. When the others in the conference room and on the screen saw the black uniforms of Hofmann’s escorts with their bold skull-and-lightning insignias crossed with pistols, the expressions on their faces told him they also knew what was coming. Good. No one should ever repeat Hofmann’s failures.

“Yes, General, my patience with you has come to an end. Again and again, I ordered you to end this rebellion in Jerusalem, but you failed. Now the chaos has spread to every city in Israel. What’s worse, it is cropping up everywhere throughout the world. And so, I have arranged a new position for you.
